Canada’s U-20 Women’s World Cup run highlights bright future for Canadian soccer

Canada’s run at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup came to an end on Sunday with a 2-0 quarterfinal defeat to defending champions North Korea, but several BCPL alumnae left their mark on a memorable tournament.

Kaylee Hunter finished the tournament with four goals, including an unforgettable hat trick in Canada’s 3-1 round-of-16 victory over France. Fellow Whitecaps FC Girls Elite alumna Jeneva Hernandez Gray was another key part of Canada’s run.

Canada reached the U-20 World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2014, with a roster featuring several players who developed or competed with programs now connected to the BCPL.

While Canada’s tournament may be over, the performances of Hunter, Hernandez Gray and their teammates offered an exciting glimpse at the next generation of Canadian talent — and a bright future ahead for the women’s game.
